12/25/2023 0 Comments Shadow of night book coverI found it a bit slow-going for the first 75 – 100 pages, with too much time spent on Diana adjusting to life in 1590, and not enough emphasis on her relationship with Matthew. At nearly 600 pages, there’s a lot to keep track of. How thoughtful of the publisher to give us a list of characters at the end – seriously, after a while I really needed it. There are a ton of new characters introduced, some of whom matter more than others. The plot moves from Oxford to London, France, and Prague. A bit of a problem for me: I didn’t know who all of these historical figures actually were, so I had to sidetrack a bit in order to figure it out. And such locals! 1500-year-old Matthew has always been an important guy, and in the 1590s, he is a spy for Queen Elizabeth, a member of the powerful supernatural ruling body, the Congregation, and a member of the School of Night, a group of influential men which includes Sir Walter Raleigh, playwright Christopher Marlowe, and various other scholars and scientists of the time. Diana must learn to dress in awkward clothing, write with a quill, and speak with an accent that doesn’t scream “hello, I’m a time-traveler!” in order to fit in with the locals. Their goal is two-fold: to find a remedial witchcraft teacher for Diana, who never learned to use her talents, and to find the mysterious manuscript before the rest of the supernatural world gets to it.įirst, bigger challenges await. Witchy Diana Bishop and gorgeous vampire Matthew Clairmont have just timewalked back to Elizabethan England in the year 1590. Also, yoga, running, and rowing, for those who get hot and bothered by reading about exercise freaks.ĪDOW ended with a plot point that left us hanging off the proverbial cliff, and Shadow of Night picks up the narrative mere moments after the conclusion of the first book. Oh, and did I mention daemons?), and yes – be still my heart – passionate, forbidden love. I loved the heck out of ADOW for its combination of smarts (Oxford professors! Secret manuscripts! Alchemy! Mitochondrial DNA!), supernatural beings (the aforementioned witch and vampire, plus their various and assorted family members, clans, secret societies, etc. ADOW is much more than a romance, and the intelligence and emotional truth at its core elevate it far above the standard, popular, seemingly endless supply of vampire fiction. True, ADOW has as its focal point a forbidden romance between a witch and a vampire… and we all know that LOVE + VAMPIRE = TWILIGHT, right? Calm down, I’m just kidding. At the time ADOW was published, I remember scads of reviews referring to it as “ Twilight for grown-ups”, which is and isn’t a fair comparison. Shadow of Night is book #2 in Deborah Harkness’s All Soul’s Trilogy, which kicked off last year with bestseller A Discovery of Witches. 12/25/2023 0 Comments Compress png to specific sizeSo let's tell the terminal we need to run the same instruction in all the files in a directory, after which I'll explain other instruction.Ĭonvert all to 1024px (you can use any pixels amount) for i in * do convert $i -resize 1024x $i-1024x.jpg done Oh! But I almost forget one of the needs: To apply this process to lots of pictures with ease.įor such thing we can do it with two processes. But you can have lots of fun when running this kind of exercises. This example was successful, nevertheless don't expect any exercises to result in smaller file sizes. Here we go! convert test-1024x.jpg -quality 50% test-1024x-50p.jpgĪnd we went from a 433.7 KB to a 176.2 KB in a single command. So I won't suggest you to try but if you are expecting me to do the example, ok. If we wish to maximum compress a maximum compressed file like this, we'll face some overhead data inserted in the file and it will result in a bigger file size. (suspense music with congas please) 433.7 KILOBYTES With this instruction, we are asking the image to be resized to be 1024 pixels wide by any amount of pixels needed in order not to lose aspect ratio. So let's do this: convert seminario-tabloide.png -resize 1024x test-1024x.jpg A couple of things indeed: We can first resize the images and apply compression after that, which will result in a smaller file size than the original, and will deliver a useful image for rendering on screen, not so good for printing but it seems we need to display it on screen and not in a printed banner, right? Which will result in a compressed file that it's not visually affected when rendered on screen, but you will see the artifacts when printing in a big paper size (bigger than letter). Please have in mind that in this example we're reducing the quality of the file, not the image dimensions. We can go further and create a smaller file size by adjusting the percentage in the same command via: convert test.jpg -quality 30% test-30p.jpg This is going to reduce the image's quality by 50% and deliver a 938.4 KB <= (Note: KILOBYTES, not even a Megabyte) filesize. This is what we need to do in order to "compress" an image. Let's now play with some other ImageMagick convert commands in order to create smaller file sizes: convert test.jpg -quality 50% test-50p.jpg This is going to convert the high definition PNG format into a "compressed" JPG format, which by itself is a smaller file! It goes from 9.5 MB to 2.4 MB.īut, 2.4 MB is yet a big file size. So, let's drop the next in a terminal: convert seminario-tabloide.png test.jpg So, how can I use this image in a website, without waiting years in order to upload and waiting some other years in order to show it in my website? The file should be compressed.Īnd when we talk about "compression" we explicitly need to change it's quality in order to make it usable for the case we are facing. So that's a different scenery which I won't cover in this explanation. Nevertheless, the image size and grid resolution is really useful for a high definition printing. In the file properties window we can see this is a 9.5 MB file, which will delay a lot to upload and will delay a lot in order to render on screen when published in a website. High Definition Pictures, with resolutions over 1024px may have a big file size. Let's first understand what a "lightweight picture" should be. The pictures should be batch compressed, preferably via a GUI.The picture MUST be "compressed" in order to lose file size but not "rezised" as refered by another user who pointed to a duplicated on this question JPG batch compression & rename (find -exec, xargs, piping?).Let's understand what the answer need to solve: Many of the answers seems to refer to other things, mostly caused because of -probably- they haven't faced such scenery. Which won't affect if we were working in a local testing production environment. Let's face that Web designers, Web developers and/or Web masters need to "compress" our image files in order to make them enough "lightweight" to be quickly uploaded to our hosting if we're working directly on a real production environment. The "compression" word seems to be misinterpreted in this question, but it's yet valid depending on the context you wish to see this. 12/24/2023 0 Comments Airflow docker operator exampleIf a login to a private registry is required prior to pulling the image, a Docker connection needs to be configured in Airflow and the connection ID be provided with the parameter ``docker_conn_id``. The anxiety of making a global error is enough to restrict my creativity, something every video editor has felt. I also love that in the magnetic timeline, the audio and visuals can be synced together in a way that won’t allow them to get out of sync. With the magnetic timeline, you can simply order your clips based on the story by snapping them into place rather than guessing where in the timeline they go and doing a constant shuffle.Īudio editing and placement are also easy in Final Cut. After all, isn’t story what this is all about? When I think about how I build out a story with multiple clips and audio tracks, the magnetic timeline concept makes sense. On the other hand, the clip snapping into place makes life much easier.Īs an Adobe Premiere Pro user ( see my Premiere Pro review), the magnetic timeline takes some getting used to but it seems like a very effective way to build a sequence. On the one hand, it might be frustrating because video clips snap into place rather than staying where you put them. Using the magnetic timeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X is like giving a toddler magnet blocks instead of traditional wooden blocks to play with. What is the best computer for video editing?.It really is in the class of the best video editing software. On a basic level, Final Cut Pro has everything you need, and on an advanced level, you’ll be impressed by options for things like color coding and remote editing. There’s a steep learning curve, but if you take the time to learn the program, you’ll be editing professional-level videos in no time. The program also touts the effectiveness of the organizational structure and magnetic timeline, which makes moving video clips around easy.Īpple Final Cut Pro is a great option for users with Mac computers who need more functionality and professionalism than iMovie. In terms of video editing, Final Cut Pro X is a big step up from iMovie, speeding up editing time and capabilities for professionals. Previous versions were good, but Final Cut Pro is significantly better. In 2011, the software was rebuilt, and Final Cut Pro was launched with a new interface, features, and enhancements. If you’re a video editor or do audio editing, you’ve likely heard of it. Apple Final Cut Pro is non-linear video editing software that’s been around and popular since the early 2000s. 12/24/2023 0 Comments Aer lingus flight seatsThe lady said "oh, you can eat on the plane." No, ma'am, I cannot - the plane food is full of of junk chemicals and allergens. On my way into Europe everything was quick and efficient but on the way back, they took their good old time at every stop and walked slowly, even though I repeatedly expressed concern about not having time to eat before my flight. I would have missed my connection if I hadn't had special assistance through customs. Very cold air but no blankets provided (though they did have them from US->DUB, but not on the return.) The Dublin airport is very unfriendly for food allergies - it's like the Irish have never heard of gluten-free or clean eating. They didn't have my special meal request. The electronics were broken, half the screens didn't work, no charging ports or headphone jacks except for their old two-prong provided earphones. The lifejackets under the seats were placed two wide, so the aisle seats only had half the legroom, which isn't much to begin with. The return flight to the US was one of the worst I've had in years, though the arrival itself was uneventful and on time. Very VERY basic flight on an old plane, but it went well enough. My flight from the US to Europe was okay. If you need a cheap flight through Europe, I guess this will do, but for an overseas flight, it is a high price for very low quality. Overall though i found Aer Lingus staff online and onboard was helpful and our flight was mostly fine so id consider using them again, in the past i travelled with Virgin Atlantic on Orlando trips yet they wasn't as helpful when contacted so in future if Aer Lingus are the better price id happily go with them again yet ill make sure i pick seats with more leg space. Days prior to our flight back i contacted them again via Twitter as myself and my son wanted to get Savis Star Wars Lightsaber from Disney worlds Galaxies edge and wanted to check they’d be okay with hand luggage and they was quick and friendly saying they were fine □ The flight home we ended up with seats 26A and C yet they was backing up to the toilet so leg space seemed to be that bit less making it a bit uncomfortable on return hence not full marks. The flight itself going was all fine I’m 6ft 2 yet found seats on flight there okay and the usual rear headrest entertainment with games and movies etc a okay enough selection to keep us somewhat entertained on our flight, staff on the flight seemed helpful and friendly enough and flight went fine. First time customer with Aer Lingus for me going with them for a trip from Manchester to Orlando and later a return, I booked via a travel agent so seat selection wasn’t there so i contacted Aer Lingus via there site explained that i was with my 14 old son and didn’t want to have us not to be sat together especially on a long flight they was quite quick in responding and accommodating sorting us seats together to and from on our trip with no extra charges or anything. 12/24/2023 0 Comments Tv show suggesterThe Moth : This podcast offers random folks the chance to tell deeply personal stories to a crowd of strangers and reinforces just how weird and wonderful humans are.Missing Richard Simmons : Ebullient fitness guru Richard Simmons used to be everywhere, and this podcast charts an investigative reporter’s attempts to find out why he disappeared.Run Bambi Run: The riveting story of ex-Milwaukee police officer and Playboy Club bunny Laurie Bembenek, who was convicted of murdering her husband’s ex, despite conflicting evidence, and subsequently escaped prison and fought to have her conviction overturned.Waveform: Laid-back chats about the latest gadgets and developments in the world of tech with Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) and co-host David Imel. The idea of nostalgia becoming a hot commodity in a world faced with crisis and devastation is. But the fun comes from the memory technology at the center of the story - technology that allows people to relive and even visually project previous moments of their lives over and over again. The story here is pretty standard fare for the genre - man loves woman, woman goes missing, man tries to find her, man gets caught up in major criminal operation with ties to the ruling class. Starring Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, and Thandiwe Newton, "Reminiscence" takes place in a near future version of Earth where rising sea levels have turned coastal cities into half-submerged metropolises with harsh class divisions. "Treasure Planet" may not reside in the Disney pantheon, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't. It's fresh, and the story is touching and fun. Spaceships look like pirate ships with giant fusion engines strapped to the back, space itself is full of colorful nebulas and herds of migrating creatures, and every planet and spaceport blends Elizabethan style with future tech in a way that's not quite steampunk and not quite cyberpunk. "Treasure Planet" has a powerful future aesthetic, which is definitely the main draw. "Treasure Planet" is, as the name implies, a sci-fi retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure novel "Treasure Island." It's a gorgeously animated, brilliantly-constructed space saga filled with early 2000s teen angst (right down to a sad boy ballad from the lead singer of The Goo Goo Dolls). We're here to talk about one from 2002 - just a couple years after the end of the renaissance - that too many people have forgotten. But overall, this is a series that holds up incredibly well and that rewards repeat viewings with new surprises and revelations.īut we're not here to talk about all the incredibly successful Disney movies that everybody already knows about. There's a staggering amount packed into the "Matrix" franchise, and for that reason, some parts can be pretty confusing - especially in the later films. Through all of the films, the series shows both the risks of advanced tech and the potential benefits, while at the same time discussing ideas of human identity, fate, purpose, community, creation, and faith. In "The Matrix Resurrections," for instance, humans and certain machines work together in harmony, accomplishing feats that neither could independently. The juxtaposition between the slick, cyber aesthetic of the Matrix itself and grim, post-apocalyptic visuals of the outside world is a grim portrait of what could be, but the film's futurism isn't just limited to warning signs about the dangers of technology. and virtual reality, but "The Matrix" took things to another level. Sure, there were plenty of cautionary tales about A.I. Few films have had the impact on science fiction that the Wachowskis' breakout hit has had over the past two decades.
